The scale of a world is an interesting facet to explore. Is the world of the book the normal everyday or does it delve into a microcosm, or travel across the universe? Variations on scale can create and define a world of wonder, limited only by the imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Universe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scale of  human\ncomfort is probably something that can be measured \u2013 a days travel for\ninstance. But what if your people travel the universe- how can such vast\ndistances be comprehended or made familiar? Star Trek does it by defining distinct\nareas \u2013 the Gamma Quadrant, the Neutral Zone, or Galorndon Core. Within these,\nbattles, various space phenomena or restricted areas can be mapped into familiarity.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To travel the distances one needs to invent warp drives,\nspore drives or rely on multi-generational ships, or a long sleep hibernation. \u2018The\nWatch Below\u2019 by James White has a multi-generational crew with the added\ncomplication of a sleeping crew. The same species, one the original, the other\nmutated by generations of living on board a ship increasingly less able to\nsupport life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going Small<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a number of stories about the small aspects of our world, and different ways to explore the theme. The world may be ours, but pinpointing a section of it \u2013 for instance delving into the world of ants, as in \u2018Rustle in the Grass\u2019 by Robin Hawdon. A realistic world, yet unfamiliar because it looks at things from a vastly different scale. A fantasy element enters in with any number of animal community books such as ‘Brambly Hedge’ by Jill Barklem, or \u2018The Rats of NIHM\u2019 by Robert O\u2019Brien. Animals doing people things on their own scale, often using large things in a different way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A variation on this is the visitor to a smaller world. A\nnumber of scifi books explore this, including Asimov\u2019s \u2018Fantastic Voyage\u2019 \u2013 a journey\ninside the body by people in a spacecraft. The movie \u2018The Ant Bully\u2019 is another\nversion. A trip into the shlock pulps of the 60\u2019s reveals \u2018The Incredible\nShrinking Man\u2019 by Richard Matheson. The title probably doesn\u2019t do it any\nfavours, as it is a fascinating exploration of a man shrinking out of our\nworld, and venturing into the unknown.  Worth a read, unlike some similar titles such\nas \u2018The Incredible Melting Man\u2019, which is just ghastly. More recent books\ninclude \u2018Micro\u2019 by Michael Crichton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small in a big World<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another variation is perhaps more well known \u2013 that of being\nnormal size in a giant world. Many authors  have explored this one \u2013 CS Lewis in \u2018The\nSilver Chair\u2019, \u2018Gullivers Travel\u2019s by Jonathon Swift, Enid Blyton in several\nadventures involving the Faraway Tree and Piers Anthony in his space travelling\ndentist in \u2018Prostho Plus\u2019. It is also a rich theme for movies and TV \u2013 think Land\nof the Giants, Jurassic Park, Mysterious Island and the interesting Downsizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The advantage of this idea is it is a mine of ideas to\nrepurpose big things into new, and show both the writer\u2019s imagination and hence\nthe ingenuity and courage of the characters. Use a safety pin and cotton as an\nabseiling tool? No problem!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big visits Average<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large creature or person in our average size world. More\noften the province of monster movies, it can be used to add an element of fear.\nA known thing is suddenly larger \u2013 the innocent becomes capable of menace. King\nKong, The Attack of the 40ft Woman, and any number of Godzilla movies have\nentrenched this concept into horror. Heinlein explores massive bug aliens in \u2018Starship\nTroopers.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a way of exploring the idea of being out of place,\nperhaps the creature is as scared as the people? Frankenstein almost makes it\ninto this category, a large monster innocent until tormented, and never really\nunderstanding the world they find themselves in. the story \u2018The Fly\u2019 by George Langelaan, a man is accidentally\ntransfigured into part fly, a horror in our world, and one of extreme danger in\nthe fly\u2019s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So all of these examples are ways of seeing the world in a different light \u2013 forcing the reader into a world that is both familiar and unsettling. Adventure can adapt to any setting, and so must the characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
