Have a safe and happy holiday season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><a><strong>The Second Rudolph.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not commonly known, even by Christmas\naficionados, that the current Rudolf is really son of Rudolph. More a clone in\ntruth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of them, Prancer, Dancer and the rest are all\ngenetically engineered. Magic only goes so far. I have magic, but it was never\nmeant to be the lethal hammer of lightening kind, more the penny ante sort that\nkeeps your trousers dry under an avalanche of toddlers. Anyway, I have eight\ntiny semi sentient reindeer, that can travel magically fast, are amazingly\nstrong and they are mean bastards. Rudolph was some sort of genetic mix up. It\nhappens, the elves get a bit carried away sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I guess my story starts way back in the 1930\u2019s,\njust before the uniform was redesigned by Coca Cola to red and white. I say\nuniform, because popular imagination \u2013 or advertising that substitutes for it \u2013\ncontrols how I appear. Jolly and fat has been pretty hard on my knees, and\ndon\u2019t get me started on the freaking chimneys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And 1932, well it was a lean year. Joyless, tired,\nhungry people do not imagine well, and Christmas, I hate to say was pretty\nthreadbare. People were starving poor, eating their boots, there was a rabbit\nplague, and people tramped across the outback in search of work. It was the\nfirst time for the dole queue, and the shame of it ate into people\u2019s souls. Ate\naway their imagination, jollity and the happiness that exists in more\nprosperous times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, I landed on a rooftop, and the bloody thing\ncollapsed. Long winter nights of burning every second beam made it a very\nflimsy structure, not even proof against eight tiny reindeer. Nor me, despite\nbeing thin and dressed in rags this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I looked people eye to eye for the first time in a\nlong time. The regulations are very strong, but I had landed in their loungeroom,\nand there must have been twenty camped there, wrapped in newspaper and huddled\ntogether for warmth. No chance of invoking the Santa invisibility clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I got out as fast as I could, but the crowd was\nfaster. The other reindeer had never liked poor Rudolph, especially since the\nfoggy night business. Sure, they sucked up to him as leader, but I knew they\nstill hated him. They plugged the doorway and the crowd dragged him down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poor Rudolph Sn. But he made damn fine sausages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(This story was first published in Flush Fiction, 2012.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Enjoy this\nblog?
